Sony Ericsson XperiaPLAY Launch Party

After a really long wait which seemed forever the Xperia Play mobile was finally launched today and I won a pair of VIP tickets for the launch party. So I pulled up my buddy Harsha and went to the event and I have to admit that the settings of the venue blew me away more than the phone did. Yeah you heard me right, the phone was well...realllyyyyyyy nice...to hold and felt classy and solid. A few seconds of just flicking through screens and pinch to zooming, I realised a bit of lag happening, so I switched to play mode and found the phone behaved like a PSP go...albeit with a smaller sized keys but for a phone it was awesome. Every time I took the phone for a go, they kept opening and giving it to me to play but I immediately told them I had to have a look at the phone itself...as a phone...well in that aspect, the Xperia PLAY didn't have anything great to offer especially for the price it's asking for. Don't take me wrong, I loved the phone...I really did...but it was just too expensive and my personal opinion is that it didn't measure up in features to that asking price.

A few things I learned about the hardware of the phone also indicated that the hardware is going to be obsolete pretty soon with only 400mb of ram. I'm pretty sure future games are going to feel  a little slow on this baby and am pretty sure SE is already brewing the XperiaPLAY 2. This is such an amazing concept and will be a success among a niche crowd. Unfortunately, I'm more of a gamer and I would rather buy the NGP (or) PSP2 because it offers a lot more for a gamer.

I expected to see something mind blowing on the phone side but was quite disappointed to see even the photo app was just the stock android one and not one of those smart and wonderful interface I've used with other SE mobiles. Come on SE, you could have at least put a basic cool interface for the camera. A HUGE downer for me is the lack of HD. Not even 720p. Yes the camera is capable of HD but I don't understand why SE would avoid the HD aspect. I know it's a gaming mobile, but COME ON!!!

And a laggy feel I got kept nagging my brains so I went around and checked out at least 3-4 units and all of them had a little lag in their performance. Something I don't want to see in a brand new mobile with not even many apps running on it.

Fortunately, I was lucky enough to find someone with a  HTC Desire Z in the crowd and asked them how they felt about the XperiaPLAY and their response was just what I expected, "I would not change my mobile for this one!!!" When I managed to hold the HTC Desire Z from the lovely lady who gladly handed it to me, I felt why I loved that mobile so much in the first place. It had the same solid build quality like the Xperia PLAY but when I just quickly went through the interface, it was like slicing butter with a hot knife...just silky smooth. Immediately I remembered all the features of the HTC Desire Z and was trying to compare it with the Xperia PLAY and everything in my mind went blank...because there wasn't much witht eh XperiaPLAY other than it's Playstation point. For my needs and price...here is a simple measurement of both phones laid out for everyone to understand:

HTC Desire Z
Xperia PLAY
Feels solid and good to hold
Feels solid and good to hold
Little scary slide mechanism
Solid slide mechanism

5.1MP Camera + 0.3MP front facing camera

No HD Video Recording. Just normal Video recording.
Sense UI is just THE BEST!!!
Timescape slows down the phone and without it it’s  pretty much like stock android.
Slide out qwerty keyboard
Slide out PS game pad
Connected to HTC’s cloud computing.
NA
Android 2.2 (Froyo)
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
Can use DLNA to share media content to TV.
NA
Preloaded Google Maps
Normal Google Maps that takes time to download each time.
Hopefully will get Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and other updates in future since HTC is known for providing updates although not very quick.
Might never get updated to the next version of Android. (Eg: Xperia X10).

So, it might seem that the HTC Desire z is the best choice given that it is now available for just £370 roughly whereas the Xperia PLAY at launch costs £500 roughly. SE can do a lot better than this, but I think they're just trying to use the different features in different versions of their Xperia line like the ARC, PRO and NEO. For example, the ARC is meant for HD video and pics, the pro is similar to the Desire Z and has a qwerty keypad and so on. My question is, if almost all these features are available in one mobile minus a couple of things like a game pad, and it costs a lot less, then that would be the smarter choice for anyone. If only SE had included some nice camera interface that might have made me lean a bit more towards the PLAY but for now I'll be playing safe by not burning a hole in my pocket and am willing to wait for the next Xperia PLAY phone to see what SE is gonna improve on!!!

As for which mobile am gonna buy, well there is just one thing that bugs me about the Desire Z, the absence of a front facing camera. I had one in my SE W980i...so it won't hurt to look for one in such an awesome phone. IF I can manage the absence of a physical keyboard, I might consider a different HTC. Let's see!!!

A quick update!!!

Well I know it's been a while but good news is that I'm self employed now and the bad news is the pay is shitty!!! Our new flat is almost ready and am going to India day after tomorrow (3rd March) for the flat warming function. Pretty excited about it cos I've been waiting for this trip since December. Once I return from this trip, am gonna look for a proper full time job. Oh I've also got my Post-Study Work Permit for 2 years...so yipeeee!!! I've been missing home and especially "A" a lot these past few months and just can't wait to get home!!!

On a totally different note, I've been wanting to buy a new proper mobile for a while and have been eyeing the HTC Desire Z since launch and thought I'd be getting that mobile...until I saw one of my favourite dream come true in the form of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and am currently waiting for it to be launched and tested on road. All said and done, I'm not financially equipped to buy the phone at this point but let's see. I've also been planning to getting a used PS3 for a while and have decided once I return from India will get one especially because A's gonna gift me FF13!!! So let's see how that one rolls out for me!!!

Well that's it for the time being. Hopefully I'll update this blog as soon as I return from India with pics of my new flat!!!

Job Dilemma...

Apart from trying to fill my working week with more part time jobs, missing my home like crazy and having my ass frozen due to the shitty snow in London, I guess I've been doing well enough. In fact, I just began my 2nd job as ABA/VB tutor with a new client through another consultant for Tuesday and Thursday evenings. So all I need right now is one more client to fill in the day times and I'll be good to go. In the past few weeks I was quite confused with an issue, I had given my commitment to one of my client for whom I'm working part-time and then I got an interview call which seemed to be for a full time post. Now the question came, do I switch  my job if I got successful in the interview and dump my current client who basically gave me a job when I was not having any jobs or do I refuse the full-time offer? I made up so many terms and conditions to myself int he end, like unless I get a really better deal for the full-time job, I will not give up my current job. On the other hand it also meant thatuntil I get at least one more job, am gonna struggle financially. So I jsut prayed to God to help me nad guide me. and guess what? I'm not having two part-time jobs and am trying to fill in whatever remaining time with another job. I also attended the interview which wasn't that great to be honest. Now even if by some random chance I got that job, I'm under no pressure to take that job because I've got plenty of flexibility in working independently and almost earn the same amount as an average full time job minus the restrictions. Am glad that my aptience finally ended in some fruitful results.

Well my new Orange San Francisco phone is just awesome. I really am sure that I want to get the HTC Desire Z now because android can be very addictive for a user like me. I did record an unboxing and a small review but felt too shy to upload it cos I thought I looked and sounded silly...but ams till debating that and let's see if I manage to mujster up the courage to upload it!!! Well that's it for now folks.

Here it is...

So, I have finally successfully managed to bring my irregular blog to the front and make it  more regular. The more subscribers I have the more I get motivated to write more. All comments are welcome. Well now that the formality is over, lets see what's been happening recently in my life...

1. I've finally got a part-time job as ABA Tutor which might offer chances for full time work.
2. I've decided to sell my Blackberry and get a basic android phone. Currently I'm looking to buy the Orange-San-Francisco which seems to be a big bang for the buck. Let's see how things go.

I will try to update my blog at least every week if not every fortnightly. I am also planning to do reviews about more gadgets I buy. Hence my first review could be the one for my new phone. Let's wait and see.

Moving to mainstream

Well, it's about time I took the proper step to move my blog to a more mainstream account and hence I've decided to delete this google account and start a new blog from my old and existing google account. I'm gonna go global...well hopefully!!! I know no one's gonna read this even but just to let myself know that I'm doing it all over brand spanking new in a more better way and in a more regular fashion!!! Good luck to me!!!
